The Importance of networking for entrepreneurs and business people

Richard Branson is one of the most famous entrepreneurs not only in the UK but around the globe. His main skill is networking. He found opportunities, secured the resources necessary and used them for his success.

Whether you are starting your own business or looking for a new job, social capital is built on relationships and relationships is an essential factor. That means that building up a network of diverse people is always helpful for your business or for yourself. Every contact within your network can create a potential possibility of greater opportunities. The more diverse your network is the better and helpful it will be for you.

Erin Portsmouth has got more than 10 years’ experience working in public relations and communications. She is working for the NHS Trafford and is also chair of the CIPR in the North West. Erin says that her entire career has been built up on contacts. She joined the CIPR which is the biggest body of public relations in the UK. She created her own network and had never really had to apply for a job. Erin got recommended by other people and companies and business people got in touch with her.

When you network you need to make sure that it is never simply about getting what you want. It is more about getting what you want and making sure that the people who are important to you get what they want too. You should help people in your network and always think of the long term effect. One day the other person will do you a favour or could help you.
Another important point of networking is that you should not just get in touch with someone when you need something. It is necessary that you maintain your relationship that you have developed.
"You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you." This is what Dale Carnegie has said. And it is true. You need to become genuinely interested in other people.

Another thing to increase is the efficiency of your networking is attending social events and business fairs and other networking meetings. When you attend events like that make sure you are prepared and you know what kind of people you may meet. Your first impression counts. You need to make sure you are self-confident. Show the other person your charisma.

Never eat alone written by Keith Ferrazzi is a fantastic guide of how to network and tells you other secrets to success.  Keith Ferrazzi says in his book Never eat alone “identify the people in your industries who always seem to be out in front, and use all the relationship skills you've acquired to connect with them. Take them to lunch. Read their newsletters. In fact, read everything you can. Online, there are hundreds of individuals distilling information, analysing it, and making prognostications. These armchair analysts are the eyes and ears of innovation. Now get online and read, read, read. Subscribe to magazines, buy books and talk to the smartest people you can find. Eventually, all this knowledge will build on itself, and you'll start making connections others aren't.”

My advice for you is to start collecting business cards and build your own network. We are living in a fast changing world and you need to be the first one out there and especially useful contacts will make a lot of things easier and possible. So start today and look for social events that you could attend and start building relationships. Maybe one day you have people like Richard Branson in your address book and I guarantee that he has useful advices or can be very helpful for you.

tate liverpool goes green...

... Is that true? I convinced myself today and went to Tate Liverpool!
... And YES it is true.

Tate Liverpool is using intelligent technology to save energy and is also part of an art recycling network. That means that even material from old exhibitions get recycled.  The Energy Institute has awarded Tate Liverpool accreditation for its achievements in energy efficiency.

Apart from the environmentally- friendly impact, Tate Liverpool also offered me an impressive insight into the world of art.

a door that leads to a reserved intimate, personal space, as well as to the space of social meeting."

marketers love talking

What is the CIM? What is Marketing really? What career opportunities have you got in Marketing?

Those three questions were answered today by Diane Earles. She is the Regional Director of The Chartered Institute of Marketing. Diane came to Liverpool John Moores University and introduced us to the CIM and it's service and talked about marketing in general. Based on case studies she made it comprehensible and very interesting.

CIM was founded in 1911. So belated congratulations on 100 years CIM. It is the largest professional body for marketers around the globe with 45.000 members.

Being a member of the CIM brings a lot of benefits such as helping you get into work and other useful advantages such as qualifications, training, network and of course it gives marketers latest news about the marketing industry.

"Marketing is much more than just Advertising" says Diane. Marketing is about finding a need. Making it need and finally make it profitable. It is all about changing attitudes & behaviours. She explained to us the strategic moves in marketing and made the industry of marketing clear.

"Do you like other people?" That is what Deane asked us. In the Marketing industry it is all about understanding people. You need to be creative & innovative. Marketing is international. It is results driven, you have to work in a team and of course it is Fun!

So get qualified! Build Experience and create YOUR marketing plan!

Big thanks to Diane Earles for a brilliant presentation.

Old Spice – an example for successful social media marketing

Over 200 videos, over 6 million views and more than 23.000 comments – the shower gel ‘Old Spice’ made history through viral marketing.

Isaiah Mustafa that is the name of the ‘ridiculously handsome guy’ who saved the brand from an image crisis. Old Spice was known as a vintage after shave for men until Isaiah Mustafa changed the image with a humorous and surprising advertising at the Superbowl. But there is more… He kept in touch with customers.

Old Spice is tweeting and filming in real time.

It was a completely new and fresh campaign. Isaiah Mustafa starts receiving questions and comments from all over the world. For example Kevin wrote him that he has fever. Isaiah’s creative video answer to that was: “Hello Kevin, how are you. Feeling better I hope. I personally never had a fever because my body is 98% muscle and muscles can’t get sick.”
Within 2 days Old Spice published 180 videos on YouTube and answered people’s questions.

Creative, humorous, sexy, classy and authentic.
That’s what Old Spice stands for now.

berlin is calling...

…It’s sunny again and I wear my sunglasses! But it’s not just any sunglasses…
…It’s ic! berlin.

ic! berlin is a big part in my life. It is an amazing company and has a great company culture. It gives me a lot of inspiration and maybe created also my ulterior motive why I decided to study Business and Public Relations.

Working for ic! berlin is something special. The atmosphere when you go to work is amazing and you feel like working together within your family.

ic! berlin is located in the heart of Berlin and has got a great roof terrace. And that is what the sunglasses are famous for: lifestyle, fashion and of course function.

The sun is still shining and I still wear my glasses.

Best regards to Berlin!

Moin Moin...

...That’s how you say hello in Hamburg.

Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany with a beautiful warehouse district. It is also famous for the ‘Reeperbahn’ and for a huge cultural scene. The Hamburger feeling is quite similar to the feeling when you are at the Albert Docks in Liverpool.

And that’s where I am at the moment.

I enjoy a cup of coffee in the sun. Simple things in life, which are beautiful. I love it, I love the summer and I love the sun.  And now you might wonder why I started with the strange beginning and talked about Hamburg.

Next to me are two guys from Hamburg. They don’t know that I am from Germany as well. Being able to understand other languages is amazing. Nowadays it is essential to speak other languages. It is difficult to learn them and takes a lot of patience. But it’s worth it.

When I went to school I didn’t like English but I still wanted to be able to communicate with other people from other countries and other cultures. So I moved to Chester after my A-levels and learned English. Now I still live in the UK and go to University in Liverpool.

“If you don't know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else. “

Life is beautiful, the sun is shining, and I finish my blog for today.

…And say ‘Moin Moin’ to the Germans.

one of the greenest buildings in Europe...

...In Liverpool? Yes, in Liverpool!

Today I had the pleasure to meet Bob Prattey. He is the chief executive of the arena
and convention centre Liverpool. He talked about his career and about the arena industry.

I am impressed by the economic impact and regenerative influence of ACC Liverpool. And all designed with the most energy efficient and environmentally- friendly criteria.

I can just say well done ACC, well done Liverpool.

And of course thanks to Bob Prattey.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY...

…in school we learn that every year has 365 days and February is the shortest month.
Is that right?

I don’t think so. Because this year has 366 days and maybe we should think about using this extra day sensibly. Maybe think about issues you may ignore or forget in our daily routine. Think about the future and about the environment. How can we make this world a better place?

Anyway everybody who celebrates their birthday today, I hope you have a fantastic day.

Happy Birthday.

This is new...

…New things are always new, uncommon and at least a bit strange. This blog is new to me. I had problems to log in.  The new things are threat for us, even if it is necessary.

So what is new out there?

Liverpool, I’m in Liverpool and I’m reading about BAMBOO CLOTHING. Amazing. BETTER FOR YOU, BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT! Clothes made out of bamboo. It sounds strange and interesting at the same time. I knew that panda bears eat bamboo. But I had no idea that you are able to make clothes out of bamboo. WOW.

Bamboo sells technical wear you can live in. Clothes for any sport activity. Fitness, expedition wear, climbing, biking, walking, winter sport and kayaking.

So next time you go on an expedition to the Himalaya and you wear bamboo clothes you will say: “Wow, my clothes are made out of this plant!”

So I say hello to a new and impressive clothing brand and finish my first blog with YES WE CAN!
